Paris, je t’aime SmartJogs in 4K to LA

By Paige Donner

Paris, je t'aime, a French feature due out for spring U.S. release, is a compilation of 20 short segments about romance in the French capital. Twenty directors (including the Coen brothers, Wes Craven, Alexander Payne, Walter Salles and Gus Van Sant) and 20 cinematographers contributed to the film, whose look was unified using Éclair Lab's digital intermediate in 4K and whose broad color range, thus, was maintained.

"This is the first 4K [high resolution] digital intermediate ever done in France - or Europe," says Éclair Lab's CTO, Philippe Reinaudo. "It shows that we are now at the cutting edge of digital."

Another first was when SmartJog sent PJT, securely, across the Atlantic directly from lab to digital theatre via encrypted digital files using its digital transfer technology. SmartJog, also a French firm, transmitted the 203 gigabytes of digital files containing the film directly from Paris to Los Angeles, where it was put on servers run by USC's high-tech Entertainment Technology Center. The encrypted digital copy sent complied with the standards of the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI), the joint venture created by seven major U.S. studios to establish specs for high-quality digital cinema.

"We've gotten positive response from studios. SmartJog's digital file transfer technology is a great way to cut down the time [of transporting films] and a great means of security for the films," explains Abby Lestition, the company's technical manager. "It's cost-effective, fast and secure. With all the piracy, this issue of security is at the forefront of the industry's concerns."

Currently, SmartJog sends about 25 terabytes (or 10,000-15,000 digital files) worldwide per month. "‘No more tapes' is a good way to look at it," adds Lestition.
