Diggers

Reviewed by Marshall McClean (May 2007)

Director: Katherine Dieckmann
Starring: Lauren Ambrose, Ron Eldard, Josh Hamilton, Ken Marino, Sarah Paulson, Paul Rudd, Maura Tierney

Water Cooler Buzz:
Ken Marino wears three hats as writer, actor and producer in this look at life on Long Island in the 1970s. Paul Rudd (40 Year Old Virgin, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Clueless) leads the cast in this 2007 South By Southwest Official Selection released simultaneously in theatres, on DVD and on HDNet by Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban's corporate mavericks.

Description:
In this rural community in the proverbial shadows of New York City, clam digging is a viable source of income, or at least it was until a large corporation claims digging rights to previously open water. When his father dies unexpectedly, Hunt (Paul Rudd) must decide what he should do with his life. Should he continue to follow in father's footsteps as a clam digger or get out of Dodge and see the world?

The beautiful Zoe, played by Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under) is a visiting New Yorker who encourages Hunt's creative side and prompts him to expand his horizons beyond Long Island. Hunt's wings are kept from flight by his confusion, curating his father's dreams and caring for a recently divorced older sister Gina (Maura Tierney - "ER," News Radio). There to help him sort through the tough time is his band of friends.

While each of the buddies neatly fits a stereotype, each of the performances is top notch. Ken Marino (The Ten) as Lozo is the young father burdened by the financial pressure of an expanding family and shrinking budget. Josh Hamilton (Broken English) wonderfully portrays the resident pot-dealing philosopher, Cons. And Ron Eldard (House of Sand and Fog, Black Hawk Down) as Jack, the ladies' man. All are likable characters that suffer only from a lack of time in the spotlight, leaving you wanting more, but understandable, given the tight 96-minute running time.

The story line may sound far-fetched to those who know Long Island for La Guardia Airport and Shea Stadium, but if you've been to Jones Beach or the Hamptons, chances are you've met a local or two. For those lucky enough to know that Long Island, Diggers will leave you with a smile - without the blisters.
