Too bad Anthony Hopkins's flesh-eating, line-chewing intellectual Hannibal Lecter has become such a joke, such a punch line. His fine elder cannibal is only in a few scenes, but he's the soul of this psychological masterpiece and a true cinema icon. So maybe a special edition - packed with three documentaries, 22 deleted scenes and, yes, recipe cards - can cleanse the palate of all those parodies. Extras or no, Demme's inside-out horror flick is a feast of Oscar®-winning drama, criminal psychology and long lingering shots of Jodie Foster's eyes. For the full effect, this two-disc set also comes in The Hannibal Lecter Collection, bundled with Ridley Scott's campy sequel, Hannibal, and a widescreen version of Michael Mann's early take on the character, Manhunter. |
