Zodiac

Reviewed by Elliot V. Kotek (February/March 2007)

Director: David Fincher
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards, Gary Oldman, Chloe Sevigny
Studio: Paramount

Water Cooler Buzz:
Loyal Fincher fans have been kept hanging for a spectacular thriller since the director delivered Se7en, The Game and Fight Club in quick succession a decade ago. With a cast list longer than the rap sheets at Rikers, fans are hoping that Fincher has the chops to gut-punch us with a serial killer film to cull Silence of the Lambs from our consciousness. Besides, this story is based on truth.

Description:
Fincher brings the seedy side of late '60s San Francisco to life with the adaptation of cartoonist-cum-novelist Robert Graysmith's words. Dealing with a case where the Zodiac killer goes uncaught despite clues delivered to the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper provides the director with a difficult dramatic scenario for audiences more familiar with a climactic pay-off. Regardless of the presence of acting giants Oldman, Downey Jr. and Brian Cox alongside a stellar young cast, it's hoped that Fincher's marvelous mind games play the largest part of all.
