About the Fall 2007 Moving Pictures Short Film Contest

Moving Pictures Short Film Contest
Competition Offers Helping Hand to Filmmakers

Laurie A. Trotta, film contest director

This unique competition brings three filmmakers to Park City, Utah, during the Sundance Film Festival as winners of the Moving Pictures Short Film Contest. The winners will receive their awards at the Moving Pictures Sundance Event on Sunday, January 20, where they will have the opportunity to meet and mingle with leaders of the entertainment industry.

Moving Pictures is committed to bringing provocative and insightful film commentary to its readers. By hosting the Moving Pictures Short Film Contest, we hope to highlight fresh new voices in the world of independent film, providing filmmakers with contacts and a platform to show their work.

Winners will have the opportunity to have their short film seen by the very top talent Hollywood has to offer. Their films may be selected for Moving Pictures Best of 2007 DVD, which will be mailed to all subscribers, including those who are members of these prestigious film industry organizations: the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, Directors Guild of America-West, Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild. The winners will be considered for distribution by Maitland Primrose Media and will also be featured in the Cannes Film Festival issue of Moving Pictures magazine.

A panel of distinguished entertainment industry judges will judge the entrants to the Contest over the winter 2007 holiday season and select the three filmmakers for the top prizes - one winner in each of three categories: documentary, nonfiction and animation.

Past judges include Academy Award®-winning producer John Daly (The Aryan Couple, Platoon, The Last Emperor); Academy Award®-winning documentarian Barbara Kopple (Shut Up and Sing, Harlan County USA); Academy Award® nominee for his 2006 short film Our Time Is Up Rob Pearlstein; and independent filmmaker F. Miguel Valenti (The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra, The Money Kings), who is Lincoln Professor of Ethics and the Arts at Arizona State University.
