| Reviewed by KC Ifeanyi (Sedona 2007) Director: Cathy Karol Starring: Her sketches?? Genre: Animation In-a-nutshell: Cathy Karol brilliantly layers the smooth jazz stylings of Jimmy Rowles with her simple sketches to create, what else, A Jazz Sketchbook. Set in what seems like an underground, mellow nightclub, Karol's black-and-white sketch stills of a performing jazz band are the perfect complement to the lively, toe-tapping Jimmy Rowles Sextet number "Cheeta's for Two." Audiences will appreciate the fact that Karol's minimally unadorned sketches do not distract or take away from the undisputed star of the short: jazz. Karol's talent undoubtedly lies in her ability to create a realistic setting and paint such colorful images with colorless characters. A Jazz Sketchbook should be a lesson to aspiring short film directors that sometimes the simplest things are the best things. Interested in how this short came to be? See "Portrait of a Sketchbook." |
