Director: Lauren Wagner
Starring: Dr. Frank Bettag, Bill Billions, Michael R. Bowen, Taji Coleman, Nelson Frederick, Brett Glazer
Genre: Documentary

Water Cooler Buzz: This short film captures the essence of racism and the fear which attaches to such hate. Lauren Wagner offers an unapologetic and thought-provoking script, full of integrity and passion, sharing a story that others could not capture in a two-hour feature. The Counter is heart-driven and entertains the possibility of humanity and fairness during a time of turmoil and fear.

Description: The Counter is a reminder of America's past. Set in 1962, the action takes place in a small diner in the small town of Nelson, Alabama, which is smothered by the harsh fact of racism and disdain for blacks. The film is completely upfront, with shutters of hope relying solely on the humanity of one waitress torn between an allegiance to the norm and doing the right thing. Marcella Laasch, as Shirl, is honest in her portrayal, and her eyes evoke fear as she watches the horrible treatment of three black students staging a sit-in. Nelson Fredricks, Dwana White and Taji Coleman portray the courageous, purpose-driven students and enlist a quality of openness to changing society.
