Visiting Shane

Reviewed by KC Ifeanyi (Cannes 2007)

Director: Varda Hardy
Starring: Shane Lewis, Quincy Coleman, James Lewis, Andrea Benson
Genre: Documentary

In-a-nutshell: Visiting Shane tells the moving story of Shane H. Lewis, a dying 34-year-old veteran who finds companionship, and even love, for the three volunteers of The Twilight Brigade's Compassion in Action organization.

Director Varda Hardy takes audiences up close and personal with Shane's debilitating condition known as ependymoma, which causes tumors to form in the spinal cord. Shane's life is slowly revealed through candid and emotional interviews with his mother, Andrea, and the Compassion in Action volunteers Quincy and James.

From Andrea's heartbreaking stories to inside jokes about midriffs, Varda captures in the documentary the little moments that were often the most poignant and uplifting at the same time. Andrea's quote at the end of the film sums up the short's message of death as a beautiful and natural, albeit somewhat painful, part of life: "Dying is not the end of the person you love, it's a continued story."
