Dear Elliot:

Guess what happened on to me from LAX to Sydney? We were halfway there when the plane had to turn around to drop off a medical emergency in Honolulu! So a 12-hour flight turned into 19.

One thing that kept me going was your mag! I had to email you and let you know my sincere appreciation of it - seriously the best film mag I've read in a while. I really love the graphic design/layout and the balanced mix between the "art" and the "business." I really loved your editor's note - original and powerful. Kicks the ass of IF, Filmink and Encore, that's for sure!

I've just entered my films Loveproof and Sub into Cinequest, South by
Southwest, Slamdance, Clermont, Berlin, Rotterdam, Tribecca and a couple more - maybe see you there! Hope L.A. is treating you well!

Cheers,

Dear Editor:

Your October/November issue on Morality really does tell "The Stories Behind the Movies." Reporting on a genre that relies on and glorifies sex and violence in order to sell its product leaves a publication with two choices: You can either do fluff pieces (what did Angelina and Brad do yesterday?) or you can do articles that provoke and challenge the reader. It is indeed refreshing that your publication attempts to treat its readers as thinking adults.

Harry Shearer's article on broadcast indecency is a case in point. Words can be coarse and offensive. They can shock and embarrass. However, such words can also convey an emotion, a thought, an emphasis that goes beyond their vulgarity. Think what the writer is trying to express - don't get hung-up on the language being used. Whether I am offended at Shearer's language is simply not relevant. Whether I can use the ideas expressed by Shearer is, in fact, the salient point.

Dear Mr. Kotek,

My wife and I wish to congratulate you on the excellent "Morality" issue of Moving Pictures Magazine. Especially poignant was the Editor's page, where words from a song about beauty, hope and friendship were juxtaposed against the harsh realities that many in the world endure daily.

We were also glad to see that, along with news and features about the industry, the issue continued to explore the morality theme by highlighting those who work in front of and behind the camera and give of their time and energy. Even more impressive are those who work under harsh or even dangerous conditions, bringing help and understanding to victims of natural disasters or those forced into gruesome lives.

Good work!
